While risk is an accepted part of farming, the right crop insurance can protect farm businesses and families. Using a combination of federal and private insurance offers farmers more protection for their business. Crop Hail insurance is a product that is not subsidized by the government under the Federal Crop Insurance Program. Policies can be purchased at any point throughout the growing season (with some time limits on wind exposure.) Crop Hail is provided directly to farmers by private insurance companies.
The oldest form of crop insurance, Multiple Peril Crop Insurance, is part of the Federal Crop Insurance Program. These policies must be purchased prior to planting and can cover for the loss of yields from natural causes, such as drought, disease, excessive moisture, and freezing temperatures, and revenue due to commodity price declines.
